Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: The records of the College of Education and Human Services document all departments within the college including those that are no longer active and noted as orphaned. Each academic department in Series 2 is divided into separate sub-series. Name changes for any of the academic departments are noted in each series. Materials of the college date from 1898-2024 with the bulk of materials dated 1965-1983. Contents mostly consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, memos, and reports. The collection is organized according to the institutions 2009 organizational chart when the college was an individual division.

The records are divided into 5 series that include Series 1 (General Business), Series 2 (Academic Departments), Series 3 (Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School), Series 4 (Educational Development Center), and Series 5 (Teacher Education). Series 2 includes 11 sub-series: Sub-Series 1 (Criminal Justice), Sub-Series 2 (Educational Foundation & Field Studies – Orphaned), Sub-Series 3 (Military Science (ROTC), Sub-Series 4 (Educational Administration & Foundations – Orphaned), Sub-Series 5 (Exercise Science), Sub-Series 6 (Library Science (Orphaned), Sub-Series 7 (Administration of Justice), Sub-Series 8 (Education & Psychology – Orphaned), Sub-Series 9 (Special Education), Sub-Series 10 (Counseling and College Student Personnel), Sub-Series 10 (Counseling and College Student Personnel), and Sub-Series 11 (Social Work and Gerontology). Active sub-series in Series 2 are expected to grow with expected accruals. Series 5 includes 2 sub-series: Sub-Series 1 (Elementary Education) and Sub-Series 2 (Student Teaching). All files are arranged in alphabetical order.

Any restrictions in this series are noted at the series level.

Overview

Academic departments are separated into individual sub-series and marked as orphaned if they no longer exist. These sub-series include Sub-Series 1 (Criminal Justice), Sub-Series 2 (Educational Foundations & Field Studies – Orphaned), Sub-Series 3 (Military Science (ROTC), Sub-Series 4 (Educational Administration & Foundations – Orphaned), Sub-Series 5 (Exercise Science), Sub-Series 6 (Library Science – Orphaned), Sub-Series 7 (Administration of Justice), Sub-Series 8 (Education and Psychology – Orphaned), Sub-Series 9 (Special Education), Sub-Series 10 (Counseling and College Student Personnel), and Sub-Series 11 (Social Work and Gerontology).

Sub-Series 1 was called Administration of Justice until 1983 when it was changed to Criminal Justice. Sub-Series 2 was eliminated by the 1983-1984 academic year. Sub-Series 3 (ROTC) began in the 1982-1983 academic year. Sub-Series 4 was terminated in 2003. Sub-Series 5 was originally called Physical Education and was renamed to Exercise Science in 2003. Physical exercise was part of the curriculum until 1983. Sub-Series 6 ended by the 1992-1993 academic year. Sub-Series 8 (Education and Psychology) was reorganized between 1970-1972 and transitioned to become Psychology. This department eventually became part of the College of Arts and Sciences and had their first department meeting in the spring of 1972. Sub-Series 10 was originally called Counseling until 2007 when it was renamed Counseling and College Student Personnel. Box 3, Folder 12 is restricted until November 7, 2049. Sub-Series 11 was originally called Social Work until it was renamed in 2007 to include gerontology studies (Social Work and Gerontology). The bulk of the documents in Series 2 include meeting minutes, correspondence, and memos.
