Overview
The Fashion Archives was founded in January of 1980 by Elizabeth Thompson (Liz), who was a professor of Sociology. She was an avid fashion collector in her personal life and started the Fashion Archives on campus as a resource to help teach sociology classes on women’s social class and social roles. The archive was housed in the basement of Harley Hall. Liz devoted her life to developing educational programs out of the archive and expanding the collection. In 2001 a Board of Directors was established, and Liz was a member. In 2007, Dr. Karin Bohleke became the director of the archives and the name changed to the Fashion Archives and Museum. A short time later, “of Shippensburg University” was added to the end of the new title. Karin transformed the fashion archives into an educational academic museum. She made improvements to the handling, processing, and conservation of artifacts. In 2015/2016 the Fashion Archives was moved to the Davis House on campus and was rededicated in 2016 as the Fashion Archives and Museum as a stand-alone unit under the direction of Dr. Karin Bohleke. Documents include correspondence, reports, exhibit programs, and newsletters.
