Overview

Spanish, German, and French were first offered as electives of the general curriculum. In 1976 Modern Languages became a department in the School of Arts & Humanities. It became part of the School of Arts & Sciences in 1982 and the College of Arts & Sciences in the 1983/84 academic year. In 1993 the department expanded to include certifications as well as a degree program. Eventually, foreign languages became a mandatory part of the college preparation, and students were required to take three semesters of one language in the high school curriculum. If they did not, they were required to take them in college. Other languages were added to the curriculum over the years, but German, French, and Spanish were a fixed part of the department. Modern Languages was changed to Global Languages and Cultures between 2018-2019. The series includes memos, correspondence, minutes, reports, etc.
