Series
Scope and Contents
From the Record Group:
The Board of Trustees record group is a collection that documents the activities of the Board of Trustees from the beginning of the school’s organization to present. It includes eight series that include Series 1: Minutes, Agendas & Resolutions, Series 2: Reports, Series 3: Correspondence, Series 4: Membership, Series 5: Financial Affairs, Series 6: General Business, Series 7: McCune Collections, and Series 8: Mickey Papers. The McCune Papers of Series 7 document the expenses and business matters that the board members faced when they first organized the school as well as McCune’s personal papers. The Mickey papers are significant because they describe the construction of the first model school on campus. Series 1-3 and 5 are arranged chronologically. Series 4, 6-8 are arranged in alphabetical order.
This record group is important because of the early documents that attest to the founding of the school. Of particular interest are those that demonstrate the financial trouble the school experienced during its infancy. There are extensive records of business associates that reveal the high quality of fixtures that were purchased for Old Main, the accounts of business transactions, receipts, bills, and letters from creditors who sometimes demanded payment for services or products already delivered.
Also important to this record group are the commentaries done by retired history professor Charles Loucks, who did extensive research on the McCune papers (Series 7) and recorded his findings. In Dr. Loucks’ commentaries, Box 70 has information about African American employees that has a noteworthy value to Shippensburg University researchers. It would be beneficial for anyone who uses the McCune papers for research to also consult the Charles Loucks commentaries for the additional historical and background information that he provided. He also provided commentaries for the Mickey papers (Series 8).

Overview
Cumberland Valley State Normal School is abbreviated CVSNS. This series contains Sub-Series 1.1 (CVSNS Business Associates), Sub-Series 1.2 (CVSNS Record Books), Sub-Series 1.3 (CVSNS Financial Matters), Sub-Series 1.4 (CVSNS General Business), Sub-Series 1.5 (CVSNS Vouchers), Sub-Series 2 (McCune Personal Affairs), and Sub-Series 3 (McCune Professional Affairs). Most of the documents in this series pertain to CVSNS records kept by John McCune. John McCune was a local lawyer who advocated to have the normal school established in Shippensburg. He became a member of the board of trustees and was instrumental in building and organizing the institution. Sub-Series 2 and 3 are McCune's own private papers. While arranging this series, it was difficult at times to differentiate between McCune's personal and professional documents to those that were related to CVSNS. Documents in this series date from 1866-1895. Some documents in this series are fragile and have been placed in protective sleeves and should not be removed. In Sub-Series 1.4, Box 2, Folder 8 (Correspondence---Miscellaneous), most documents are illegible. It was difficult to determine if the gas and light bills were all for the school or if they also included John McCune's bills for his business. This series is arranged in alphabetical order. Sub-Series 1.5 is an exception to alphabetical order and is in chronological order. Sub-Series 3, Box 5 and Box 6 contains Charles Loucks' commentaries that give a detailed history and background of the documents as well as some commentaries on individuals mentioned in the documents. These commentaries serve as a helpful resource for research conducted with this collection.
Arrangement
Arranged in alphabetical order. Sub-Series 1.1 is also in alphabetical order and middle names are included in that order. The exception to alphabetical order is is Sub-Series 1.5 (CVSNS Vouchers), which is arranged in chronological order.
