Scope and Contents
From the Record Group:
This collection contains scrapbooks compiled by students, alumni, and staff of Cumberland Valley State Normal School, Shippensburg State Teachers College, Shippensburg State College, and Shippensburg University. There are seven series that include Series 1 (Class Scrapbooks), Series 2 (Academic-Year Scrapbooks), Series 3 (Photo Scrapbooks), Series 4 (Sports Scrapbooks), Series 5 (Herbaria Scrapbooks), Series 6 (Alumni Scrapbooks), and Series 7 (Miscellaneous Scrapbooks). The collection is a unique record of people and the institution.
Most of the scrapbooks in the collection are books termed “yearbooks,” which contain a variety of invitations, programs, clippings, dance cards, menus, minutes, schedules, and membership lists pertaining to specific academic years. These are found in Series 2 (Academic-Year) The creators of these yearbooks are unknown. Other scrapbooks in the collection are photo books (Series 3), herbaria compiled by botany students in the 1890s (Series 5), scrapbooks compiled by known alumni commemorating their years spent at the school (Series 6), basketball and football (Series 4), and scrapbooks compiled by class offices about the experience of the collected class while at Shippensburg (Series 1). Series 7 (Miscellaneous) includes a variety of books. One of particular note in this series is the Ada V. Horton book. She was the school’s registrar for many years, who has been commended for her important contributions to the success of the school. This contains folders of information about her and her work and is not in book format. These files were found with the scrapbooks so remains in place. There are four scrapbooks in Series 4 (Sports) that were created and donated by wife of Rodger Goodling, who was the college basketball coach for 20+ years. The books are beautifully done and document Goodling’s long and successful career here at Shippensburg. The entire collection ranges in date from 1883 to 2001. Most of the collection is arranged in chronological order except Series 4 and Series 7. The finding aid was revised in 2023 to reflect changes made to the growing collection and the new record group.

Overview
Cumberland Valley State Normal School herbaria are scrapbooks of dried plants and specimens completed by senior botany students under the guidance of natural sciences professor Joseph F. Barton during the 1890s. Each herbarium includes dried specimens with notes, which vary from the location and date the specimen was found, to common and botanical names for plants. Each book in the series is bound with ribbon or cord. Each box is labeled with the name of the creator, but the name of the creator in Box 3 has faded to a degree that the name is no longer legible so it is marked as Unknown.
