Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of Margaret P. Evans. Included are prints, negatives, slides, photographs, digital collections, and miscellaneous works. For some projects there are more than one format for a single image. The work that comprises this collection was created between 1970 and 2004. The vast majority of the contents of this collection are from Margaret P. Evans’ professional endeavors as a photographer and college educator. However, there are records from her personal life as well. Among the collection are professional photographic projects including her work on steel mills, the Polish textile industry, the Everglades, portraits, the Upstairs Room, Mythic Images, polaroid work, Girls in White Dresses, and barns. Much of her work has taken place in the eastern United States. Some portions of her personal records are from Africa, South America, Europe, and Korea. Evans’ project on the Polish textile industry took place in Lodz, Poland. Her teaching materials from her time as an educator at Shippensburg University are also included in the collection.

The records are arranged in 6 series. That includes Series 1 (prints), Series 2 (negatives), Series 3 (slides), Series 4 (photographs), Series 5 (digital collections), and Series 6 (miscellaneous). The contents of each series are arranged alphabetically.

Processing Information

The Margaret P. Evans collection was donated to the Shippensburg University Archives and Special Collections in 2015. The first step taken in processing the collection was a thorough inventory of the different formats and size of each format. A brief plan was made on how the collection would be organized and the types of materials needed to properly store the various formats. It was determined that each format should be processed at separate stages, and the necessary supplies were ordered at each stage. Slides were processed first and placed into archival slide kits. Negatives of standard strip size and squares were stored in plastic sleeves and folders. Both negatives and slides were organized in alphabetical order by project name. Photographs and negative contact sheets were organized by project within boxes. Framed and unframed prints were processed last and placed into map folders within flat files in the archives. Prints that were professionally framed were kept in their original condition, but all the rest were removed from the frames. The digital collection was inventoried and left in original order.
