Overview
This series is divided into 4 sub-series that include Sub-Series 1 (Pride Center), Sub-Series 2 (Shippensburg Students for Gay Rights), Sub-Series 3 (S.A.L.E) and Sub-Series 4 (PAGE Center). In January 2022 the PAGE Center (Pride and Gender Equity) was organized to combine the Pride Center and the Women’s Center. Documents from the original Women’s Center will remain in Series 8. Documents from the new PAGE Center will be put in Sub-Series 4. Documents in Sub-Series 2 were donated to the archives by Linda Kesselring in May 2021. This was the first organization on campus that supported gay people, and Linda was the president. The collection is small but includes news clippings, photographs, gay activism documents, and correspondence that demonstrate the challenges and victories of Shippensburg University’s first gay rights activists. Folder 10 contains publications that may not have been written by authors affiliated with the college but were kept with the collection. There are also some photographs in this collection that were taken by Dr. Steven Burg on the day of the donation, and those photos include Melanie Reed (Archives Technician), Linda Kesselring, and her partner Jo Deaton. Sub-Series 3 materials were donated by Patrick Thompson, president of the organization, during the LGBTQ History Project event that was a collaboration between the archives and the history department. Other documents in this sub-series were donated by Jenna Holtzman, member of S.A.F.E.Some documents in this collection were created by S.A.F.E (Students Advocating for Equality). These are the same group who changed their name, but the timeline of that change is unclear. There are three oversize S.A.L.E posters from this collection housed in the annex and two posters in File Drawer 27. There are two scrapbooks in box 3. Any news clippings in the scrapbooks were replaced with photocopies of the clippings. The series currently dates from 1969-2024 and is arranged in alphabetical order with no restrictions.
